Tulips Quilt

Dorothy Rankin signed this applique quilt with her initials DJR, 1996. This quilt is one of five in the collection that were made from a Leeward Company kit.

A cream-colored top and backing provides a field for the central motif of 12 bunches of tulips, arranged in four rows of three. Four three-petaled tulips are arranged in an X shape. Each tulip stem has two symmetrical leaves springing from the stem. The leaves form a cross shape.

Around the outer rim of the quilt are single tulip stems, with two stems crossed at the corners. All tulip stems are green, the tulips themselves are two shades of pink. The darker pink is a floral calico. The quilt is bound with a wide band of the same dark pink calico, effectively creating a frame for the quilt. The quilting forms a pattern of diamonds across the quilt except around the central motif.
