Halestine J. Session

Halestine Jackson was a native of Hartsville, South Carolina. She was the wife of David Henry Session.

Session received her undergraduate degree from Allen University, Columbia South Carolina, and Master’s Degree from the University of Illinois. She was a former high school teacher in Timmonsville, South Carolina and was a kindergarten teacher for 26 years at Washington School in Champaign, Illinois before retiring. Mrs. Session was recognized by Bank of Illinois and Channel 15 as Teacher of the Month in 1989.

Mrs. Session was a member of and dedicated Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church. She also gave freely of her time working with the Scholarship and Benevolent Committee at the church. She was a member and officer in the following Bethel Church groups: Willing Workers Club, Expansion Fund, Scholarship Committee and Benevolent Fund. She was a member of Epsilon Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, NCNW, NAACP, Urban League, Allen University Alumni Association, and the University of Illinois Alumni Association.

Mrs. Session prepared weekly meals for many women and men who lived alone. In addition, she visited and took necessities and treats to nursing home residents. Halestine loved learning. She also loved children and working with them.

On several occasions at Bethel A.M.E. Church, the children, with her guidance, had delivered performances in plays and public speaking. She has tutored children in her home and continues to volunteer in the schools.

Halestine was married to David H. Session and they had two sons: Kendal M. Session and Darrel R. Session (deceased). They also had two granddaughters: Miesha and Courtney.

Halestine Session passed away on April 18, 2021.
