Ring Around the Roses Quilt

This quilt was completed by Dorothy and/or Stan in 1996, but employed a kit pattern from the 1940s, from the Progress Quilt Company.  The Chicago company sold more than 135 different kits between 1923 and 1994.  This applique quilt’s name is Ring Around the Roses as a vine scroll of roses surrounds a field of six rose buds in the center of the quilt A rectangle is formed by the circlets of roses and rosebuds, six down and four across. The vine scroll is composed of perfect circles, where the circles touch a large rose is applied. On the midpoints of the circles are rose buds, and each circle has two sets of three leaves attached. The top of the quilt is a bright white. The edge is scalloped and bound in dark pink.  Each rose is rendered slightly differently. Clearly the quilter appreciated subtle changes in the pattern and added artistic touches to its execution.

As with the Bridal Wreath Quilt, this quilt evokes mid-19th century Rose of Sharon and Ohio Rose quilts without actually replicating them.
